This website is an outline guide to the garden of artists Maureen Sawyer and Duncan Watmough.
After winning the award of the BBC Gardener of the Year for the North of England in 1999, Southlands opened its gates in 2002 to the public and the National Gardens Scheme. In doing so, thousands of pounds has been raised for charity. It has been described as a mini Hidcote because of the way in which it is divided into separate areas each with its own character and planting schemes.
The garden has featured on ITV’s Britain’s Best Back Gardens and in many books and magazines, including Gardeners’ World, Amateur Gardening, Lancashire Life and Gardening Which?
In 2012 it was one of four gardens to represent the Cottage Garden Society at the prestigious Open Gardens exhibition at the Museum of Garden History in London and one of four finalists in the Daily Mail National Garden Competition. In 2016 the garden was featured On Alan Titchmarsh's ITV programme 'Love Your Garden'
